Police Check: When working in certain specialities, all hospitals will require you to have a negative police check. The NHS policy states that health authorities should provide staff with a letter on request, which confirms a negative police check and be valid for one year. You can also approach your local police station and complete a police check from there, receiving an office letter after the check has been completed. If you hold a negative police check you should send us a copy and we will retain it on file. Having such a letter saves each health authority from running the check and makes it easier to place you in a locum post.
Criminal Conviction: Under the "Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, (Exceptions) order 1975," applicants for locum medical posts are not entitled to withhold information about convictions or cautions which for other purposes are "spent." Doctors are expected to provide UK-Locums Ltd., with a statement of any criminal convictions or cautions.
Legal Context for Medical Practice: You are expected to have an understanding of the legal context for medical practice appropriate to the posts you undertake, (e.g. The application for the Mental Health Act 1983 or the Mental Health Act (Scotland) 1984 in psychiatric practice). For further information, the BMA publication, "Rights and Responsibilities of Doctors ISBNO-7279-0753-0" is recommended.
Maximum Working Hours: You should ensure that working as a locum will not cause you to breach the controls of hours etc., set out in the "New Deal of Junior Doctors," hours. Working to excess may negate the benefits of Crown Indemnity and should tiredness be blamed if a mishap occurs, it could have serious implications. Your acceptance of work is taken as evidence that you will not breach the controls.
Annulment
Cancellation of Appointments by Trusts: Clients hold the right to cancel appointments, vary rotas or terminate positions when you have already begun work without notice and without compensating UK-Locums Ltd., for loss of earnings. UK-Locums Ltd., have a policy of not using clients who habitually do this. In instances such as this we will endeavour to offer you alternative work.
Cancellation of Locums by Doctors: When a hospital selects a locum for a position, they forgo several other candidates. If you cancel after accepting a position, other candidates may no longer be available and the hospital may incur unnecessary financial loss through cancelled clinics. You should never accept a booking if you have no intention of working it. Cancelling bookings without a good reason may result in future bookings being withdrawn. To state "personal circumstances" is not acceptable, as we have to transmit this information to the hospital. We will require a letter detailing the circumstances surrounding your cancellation. If you have committed to work through UK-Locums Ltd., we would expect you to honour that commitment. Unexpected circumstances can arise when you are unable to complete a booking. In these instances you should complete as much of the booking as possible, even if it is a day or two, to enable a replacement to be located and the hospital to make alternative arrangements.
